Suspect in Town of Mazomanie homicide shot, killed by law enforcement

TOWN OF PESHTIGO, Wis. (WKOW) -- Two officers from the City of Marinette Police Department shot and killed a person who was driving a car that authorities said is connected to a homicide investigation in the Town of Mazomanie

According to a news release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), an officer with the Marinette Police Department spotted a vehicle of interest related to the person found dead in a Town of Mazomanie home Friday morning. The officer tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver sped away.

Several law enforcement officers followed the vehicle until it crashed on US Highway 41 near Schacht Road.

Police said the driver got out of the car and approached them. A Marinette County deputy deployed their taser, but that did not stop the driver from approaching them, they said. Then, two officers from the Marinette Police Department shot at the driver. The driver died at the hospital.

Law enforcement found a "sharp-edged weapon" at the scene.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office said Friday evening the suspicious death investigation in the town of Mazomanie is now being investigated as a homicide.

The victim, 70, was found inside a home in the 9800 block of Dunlap Hollow Road Thursday night. His vehicle was nowhere to be found at the time, but later located by law enforcement in Marinette County, where the crash and shooting happened.

Law enforcement agents from the Marinette County Sheriff's Office, Marinette Police Department and Peshtigo Police Department responded. None of them were hurt, the news release said. The officers who fired their weapons from the Marinette Police Department were placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

The DOJ's Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the deadly shooting.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office is investigating the homicide in the town of Mazomanie. The identity of the victim will be released by the medical examiner's office.
