MADISON (WKOW) — Madison Metro School Board President Gloria Reyes says she’s vindicated after she says a board vote cleared her of ethics violations in the wake of a controversial vote to place Madison Police officers in schools.
A complaint against Reyes maintains the board’s ethics code barred Reyes from voting on the district’s contract with the city because she is employed by the city of Madison, and the city is a district vendor in receiving payment for the police services. City officials say Reyes has been employed by the city since 2002, and is paid $122,000 in her current position as a Community Development Specialist. Reyes assumed that position in April.
“Some have suggested this complaint was really aimed at undoing the Board’s vote on school resource officers. I do not know what motivated it. What I do know is that attempts to distract or discourage me from the important work this Board must do will fail,” Reyes wrote in a prepared statement Monday evening.
In June, the school board voted 4-3 to approve the contract. The city’s Common Council later approved the deal.
