Two people dead after head-on crash in Dane County

TOWN OF DEERFIELD, Wis. (WKOW) -- Two people are dead and another is hurt after a crash in the Town of Deerfield Sunday afternoon, according to the Dane County Sheriff's Office (DCSO). 

DCSO said the crash happened around 4 p.m. Sunday on STH 33 just north of CTH BB. 

Authorities said a driver was headed south on STH 73 when they crossed over into the northbound lane of traffic and hit another vehicle head-on. 

Both drivers died. DCSO said a there was a 28-year-old man who was a passenger in the northbound vehicle. He got hurt and was taken to the hospital, where he is stable. 

The sheriff's office said two dogs were also in the northbound vehicle. One dog survived, and the other died in the crash. 

DCSO said the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office will release the names of the people who died at a later date. 

As of 7:45 p.m. Sunday, STH 73 was still closed as authorities continue to investigate the crash. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said the scene cleared and all lanes of STH 73 reopened just after 9 Sunday night.
