Family member arrested in murder of 8-year-old found dead in Rock Co.

ROCK COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) -- A 20-year-old man has been arrested in the death of an 8-year-old family member.

During a news conference Tuesday, the Rock County Sheriff's Office said Dayveon Lathrop was arrested on tentative charges of first-degree intentional homicide and hiding a corpse. Lathrop had previously been arrested for child neglect, bail jumping and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to officials, at about 6:15 p.m. Saturday deputies and a town of Fulton officer responded to the 5500 block of West Miles Road for a report of a missing 8-year-old.

The Rock County Sheriff's Office says law enforcement did a cursory search of the home and found nothing, so they began searching the neighborhood with K9s and drones.

During the investigation, officials got a search warrant for the home and eventually found the child inside, dead. When asked, the sheriff would not elaborate where the child was found exactly or how the child was killed.

Officials are not identifying the child at this time.

Lathrop does not have a court appearance scheduled yet and a criminal complaint has not been filed as of Tuesday afternoon. The sheriff says Lathrop is "being evaluated."
