Dane Co suspect previously convicted in attempted sex with corpse case

CASSVILLE, Wis. (WKOW) -- The Middleton man who sheriff's officials said was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a homicide in Iowa and a police pursuit and home invasion in Dane County had a previous, notable criminal conviction.

In 2010, court records show a jury found Alexander Grunke guilty in connection to a scheme to dig up a dead woman, so his brother could have sex with the body.

Grunke, his brother and another man went to a Cassville cemetery in 2006 to dig up the body of a 20-year-old woman who had died a week earlier in a motorcycle accident.

Grunke was convicted of three felonies: attempted criminal damage to a cemetery, attempted theft and attempted 3rd degree sexual assault.

At the time of the crime, Wisconsin did not have a law specific to necrophilia.
