Man involved in home invasion previously charged with abducting 13-year-old

DODGEVILLE, Wis. (WKOW) -- Court records filed in Iowa County at the end of March reveal new details in connection to a pursuit and home invasion that ended with two people dead in the Town of Albion.

Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said Alexander C. Grunke, 38, of Middleton, was found dead of an apparent suicide inside of a Town of Albion home after he fired into the house and barricaded himself in the basement for hours.

Prior to this, Barrett said Grunke and a 13-year-old dropped a 5-month-old baby off in the Town of Dunn. Law enforcement said the baby was left to Grunke's acquaintance.

After that, Barrett said Grunke and the 13-year-old shot at deputies during a pursuit that ended in Albion.

The girl was found unresponsive in the woods. Despite livesaving efforts, she died.

A criminal complaint in Iowa County stated Grunke was accused of abducting the girl from the Highland home where she was living with her mother on Jan. 11.

The complaint and law enforcement said the 13-year-old in both incidents is the daughter of Tana Poppe.

Poppe was found dead in Dubuque County, Iowa prior to the pursuit and home invasion in Albion. Dubuque County Sheriff's officials said Grunke was a person of interest in her death.

Poppe reported the 13-year-old missing the morning of January 11.

The criminal complaint in Iowa County accused Grunke of abducting the 13-year-old for more than twelve hours without consent, for an unlawful purpose.

Police said they found the two at the Dutch Mill Park and Ride in Madison in the early morning hours of January 12.

The girl was returned to Poppe.

The criminal complaint also revealed Grunke was Poppe's ex-boyfriend, and the two were both parents of the 5-month-old girl dropped off in the Town of Dunn.

Grunke did not have any custody of the 13-year-old.

Separate court records showed Poppe has a domestic abuse injunction against Grunke that was in place until 2027. As part of that, Grunke was not to have any firearms.
