Mount Horeb police shoot, kill student with gun outside middle school

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. (WKOW) -- Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul announced Wednesday evening an active shooter outside Mount Horeb Middle School was killed by Mount Horeb police officers.

AG Kaul said the suspect was a minor and attended the Mount Horeb School District. Kaul and Superintendent Steve Salerno declined to provide any other identifying information about the student other than that the student was a male.

Kaul said late Wednesday morning the district went into lockdown while police responded to a report of a person with a weapon outside the middle school. The suspected student was not able to get inside the school.

Kaul declined to share other details that led up to the suspected student's death but said Mount Horeb police used deadly force. Officers were wearing body cameras.

The Department of Justice's (DOJ) Office of School Safety is providing support to students and staff at district buildings Thursday. School will not be in session. Superintendent Salerno said he hopes to resume classes Friday.

The DOJ's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is leading the investigation.

No students besides the suspected gunman were physically injured during the incident.

There were early reports there may be an ongoing threat even after the suspect was shot by police. After following up, Kaul says they don't believe there is an ongoing threat at this time.

Several Wisconsin officials have released statements surrounding the incident.

“May 1st, 2024 will be a date not forgotten. Moments like this turn lives upside down, cause trauma, sorrow, and a moment of reflection for all of us." Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said in a statement Wednesday.

Gov. Evers said that he is praying for the health and safety of the kids, educators, and staff, and expressed his gratitude for the first responders.
