22-year-old charged with deadly Fourth of July shooting in Columbus

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) -- The man being held responsible for the deadly Fourth of July shooting in Columbus appeared in court for the first time Wednesday afternoon. 

Jonathan Luna, 22, is charged with two felonies in connection to the shooting that left one man dead -- first-degree intentional homicide and attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

Around 1:30 a.m. on July 4, police investigated what they thought were fireworks near the downtown area of Columbus. After several 911 calls, police discovered that a man had been shot. The man was identified as Jose De Jesus Fuentes Hernandez, 42, of Columbus. Hernandez was taken to the hospital and later died. Police said a fight led to the shooting.

Luna was arrested at a Madison hotel around 12 hours after the shooting. He taken to the Columbia County Jail where he remains with a bond of $10 million. Luna is also charged with misdemeanor bail jumping.

Luna is due back in court on Aug. 26.
