MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison alder was arrested and booked into the Dane County jail on Thursday night, according to online jail records.
Charles Myadze was arrested by the Madison Police Department on the following tentative charges:
- Strangulation
- False imprisonment
- Battery causing substantial bodily harm
- Burglary to a building or dwelling
- Burglary with battery of a person
Records show Myadze was booked around 6:45 p.m.
A spokesperson for the Madison Police Department told 27 News a person came forward and shared information about Myadze's actions. The department started an investigation that led to probable cause being filed. Myadze met with officers Thursday afternoon and was arrested on "a string of domestic charges."
Myadze is the alder for Madison's District 18.
At least three women have publicly accused Myadze of sexual harassment and domestic violence, including a fellow alder. An internal investigation found his behavior did not violate the city's policy on harassment and discrimination.
At a Common Council meeting on Tuesday, a vote to censure Myadze passed. He was also removed from and replaced on committees where he served.
In previous statements to 27 News, Myadze has denied the accusations against him. 27 News reached out to Myadze's attorney about the Thursday arrest and is waiting to hear back.
The Madison Mayor’s Office released the following statement upon news of Myadze’s arrest:
“We are aware of the situation but can not comment on ongoing investigations. The City of Madison has no jurisdiction in criminal prosecutions, so we are referring any media inquiries to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office. We would like to remind the public that due process is an important part of the justice system and to respect the privacy of victims.”
