1 hospitalized after fall through ice on Lake Mendota

MADISON (WKOW) — One person was hospitalized Wednesday night after falling through the ice on Lake Mendota.

The Madison Fire Department was called at 10:50 p.m. to the lake near Picnic Point for a person who fell in the water, according to spokesperson Cynthia Schuster.

The person used their cell phone flashlight as a beacon, which helped rescuers spot him from shore, Schuster reported.

He was located about three quarters of a mile from the UW Campus Lot 60 boat ramp. Crews launched their airboat from that boat launch.

The Lake Rescue Team sent out two people in exposure suits, who were able to rescue the person from the water. The team brought him back to shore, Schuster reported.

Paramedics took over medical care at the shore. The patient was taken to the hospital.

The patient reported walking on the ice when he fell through. He was in the water for about 20 minutes, according to Schuster.
