Sun Prairie Police Department releases statement on immigration concerns

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WKOW) — The Sun Prairie Police Department released a statement Friday in an attempt to ease concerns regarding immigration status after President Donald Trump took a series of actions in his first week in office targeted at illegal immigrants.

"The Sun Prairie Police Department wants to reassure everyone who lives, works, attends school, drives through, or visits our community that we are committed to serving all people, regardless of immigration status," Police Chief Jeff Hook said. "As law enforcement officers, we do not routinely inquire about a person’s immigration status during our interactions nor detain or arrest individuals solely for suspected violations of immigration laws. We recognize that our community thrives when all residents feel safe and supported regardless of their background."

Hook said he understands that recent events may have created fear and uncertainty among immigrant and refugee populations.

"We want to reassure everyone that their right to receive services, report crimes, serve as witnesses, and participate in everyday activities in our community is not dependent on their immigration status," Hook said.

He added, "Individuals do not need to fear being targeted or investigated solely due to their immigration status. We will collaborate with immigration authorities only in cases involving criminal activity and not beyond this scope."

Hook encouraged residents to contact police if they need further clarification.
