City of Madison snow removal crews prepare to deploy plows and salt trucks

MADISON (WKOW) — After what has been a fairly dry winter in Wisconsin, the City of Madison's Streets Division is eager to prepare for slick road conditions ahead of an incoming snow system.

"We want to make sure our equipment, much of which is used for other work when we don't have snow and ice, is up and running," said Streets Superintendent Charlie Romines. "We've got plenty of salt still to use, so that's no issue."

Romines said it won't be too cold for salt for the snow system moving through on Wednesday. However, frigid temperatures could impact how quickly the salt starts to work.

"What I would encourage people to do is really have patience and understand the plows will be out," Romines said. "We will be plowing, but to get down to that last half inch, quarter of an inch or so, it's really going to be up to that salt."

While it is snowing, the city deploys trucks only to the salt routes. This includes major streets and connections, Metro Transit bus routes and any streets near schools, hospitals, police stations and fire stations.

Romines is reminding drivers, plow trucks still slide on the roads, so it is important to give the trucks plenty of space.

"Please give the folks in the plows a wide berth," Romines said. "There is nothing magical about a plow that keeps it from sliding, or stopping and going any faster than you can."
